An idea started at the Joust and has finally materialized! New foodie friends Rachel, Debbie and me of course will be taking turns in hosting a new blogging event under the name of COOK THE BOOKS, since we discovered that we love reading and cooking very very much.
The book discussion is taking place here. However, if you haven’t yet read the book, or are in the process of reading it, there might be some spoilers!
COOK THE BOOKS GUIDELINES
1) Starting today, October 1st, COOK THE BOOKS readers are asked to
read Prior, Lily, «La Cucina» (NY: HarperCollins, 2000).
The Sicilian version of proto-foodie novel «Like Water for Chocolate», in which our middle-aged librarian protagonist, Rosa Fiore, leaves her raucous rural peasant family, comprised of six older brothers, a pair of younger Siamese twins, and her frequently absent parents when her lover is murdered by the Mafia. She becomes an academic librarian in Palermo and saves her passions for her cooking, until a mysterious English visitor, L’Inglese, enters her life.
2) After reading the book, cook up something delicious inspired by
this novel and blog about it. If you don’t have a blog, one of us
three hosts above would be happy to post your entry as a guest
blogger. Make sure to include a link to this COOK THE BOOKS
announcement so others can find out about the details.
3) In the meantime, feel free to suggest other foodie readings for a
future round of COOK THE BOOKS by leaving a comment after this post.
4) This round of COOK THE BOOKS will run from October 1, 2008 to
December 15, 2008. Participants will then be asked to vote on the next
Cook the Books reading selection and for the most mouthwatering COOK
THE BOOKS entry. The winner will receive a fabulous badge to place
proudly on their blog.
5) Ready, set, read!

Great news that you’re going through with the book & cook food event. Will there be a man-friendly book on the horizon?
There was another «cook the book» event over on Hooked on Heat
http://www.hookedonheat.com/book-club/
but it doesn’t look like it’s active as of August.
Serious Eats has something similar as well but I don’t think it’s a roundup type event.
Good luck!
i love the sound of this event – do i need to buy the book (as it’s not in my library already)
This will be so much fun! Peter, I think if you read La Cucina, you will find that it is very man-friendly. At least the heroine is VERY man-friendly. But suggest any other titles, fiction or non-fiction that we might all want to dig into for another Cook the Books selection.
This will be fun!
Hola darling! This event sounds fantastic!!! I love reading and love cooking… so I got the basics to participate and would love to do so… have to look for the book in Spanish (if I read it in english might take me 3 months, lol)
Wow, it wasn’t until you wrote a summary of the book that I realized I have read that book, but its been a few years! What a great one to start with! I have Kitchen Confidential in my «to read» pile, I see it is on your bookshelf too! 🙂
Hi… i’m a new follower of your blog. Interesting idea this.
Any tips on where i can find these books in Athens? Moved here almost a year now.
Jen,
It is a great book, maybe we should make it the next read for the club!
Alison,
I ordered it from Amazon.com. They deliver to Greece!
